Lunch-o-Matic Updates

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

Updated a few new things over at Lunch-o-Matic today. The map shouldn’t send you to the ocean any more, it will only take valid addresses, and there’s a link to get more info about the restaurant. Coming soon: narrow search to specific kinds of restaurants, driving directions, fewer false positives, error reporting, and maybe even some sort of actual site design! Suggestions are always welcome, feel free to leave any you might have in the comments.

How to destory the earth

Friday, June 9th, 2006

At one point or another, the evil genuis in all of us has thought “How could I possibly destory the earth?” Its not as easy as you would think, but it is doable. My personal favorite way:

Total existence failure

You will need: nothing

Method: No method. Simply sit back and twiddle your thumbs as, completely by chance, all two hundred thousand million million million million billion trillion atoms making up the planet Earth suddenly, simultaneously and spontaneously cease to exist.

Go read it.

I logged on to Facebook yesterday to find a friend request from someone at my old high school. Apparently, they finally got on facebook. So all you kids at Northwest High, watch out. The magical world of facebook may seem fun and innocent now, but it can ruin your life. Please refer to this instructional video for more information.

Does Sony Owe You Money??

Friday, March 17th, 2006

Last Fall, the nice folks over at Sony/BMG released some CDs containing XCP and Suncomm MediaMax copy protection software. This was all well and good for a while. You couldn’t do what you wanted with your CDs because Sony decided they don’t want you to make more than 3 copies of your CDs or rip them in any program other than Windows Media Player, leaving us iTunes user out in the cold.

Then last October someone noticed that the XCP software secretly installs itself on your computer, sends back information to Sony, and breaks your computer if you try to uninstall it! The software is installed like a “rootkit”, which basically hides itself from your operating system so you can’t see it, so it can perform malicious activities. The MediaMax software also spies on you, even if you click “no” on the EULA (end user lisence agreement) page. It also turns out that both programs have massive security flaws that open up your system to viruses!
Oh, about that EULA I was talking about. If you said “yes” to thier agreement:

1. Sony-BMG can install and use backdoors in the copy protection software or media player to “enforce their rights” against you, at any time, without notice”
2. If you move out of the country, you have to delete all your music.
3. You have no right to transfer the music on your computer, even along with the original CD.

Wonderful!

When asked about it, Thomas Hesse, President of Sony BMG’s global digital business division said

Most people, I think, don’t even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?

Why should you care if Sony is spying on you and crippling your computer?

Anyways, the EFF sued and won, so if you bought any of these Sony/BMG cds last year, you can get a DRM free replacement, and either 7.50 cash and a free album download from the music service of your choice (itunes, Wal-mart, Sony Connect), or 3 free album downloads from a music service of your choice. So if you own any of those CDs, go take what Sony owes you!!

Redesign, End of School

Friday, December 23rd, 2005

I’ve been telling myself for the last month that I’m gonna finish my website. Between finals and just not caring enough, it never got done. After sitting down to actually do it tonight, I decided to go for a new theme and completely relaunch the site. Which means a good chunk still isn’t done, and there’s still quite a bit of designing left to do, so be patient, not that most of you care anywhoos.

I was planning on redesigning the site, but since Wordpress 2.0 is coming out next week, I’ve decided to hold off untill then.

The semester is finally over. Finals went well, much easier than I expected they would be. Wound up with all A’s and B’s. Also, I found out that I got a job as a teaching assistant for the Intro to Programming Lab, which means I can quit gallup and actually have free time in the evenings!
